I need your help, please

My sweet Maggie (now 10) had her rear right leg amputated in October, 2013. She was doing so well, earned her 350-visit pin from Therapy Dogs International and was such a wonderful role model for children and adults alike.

She was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer (not related to the cancerous growth on her leg). She had surgery to remove the tumor last Thursday (January 15, 2015) and I brought her home on Friday. On Tuesday she begins the first of probably 5-6 chemo treatments (every three weeks). This type of cancer is not curable, but we are hoping to give her one more great year of love and happiness.

Here is my problem that I hope you can help me with. Maggie has been experiencing some incontinence and I worry about my 2-year-old dog being exposed to her waste in our backyard after her chemo treatments. So, I have been looking online at doggy diapers and I realized they would not work on a tripawd!!! I looked at the TriPawds store online and searched for diapers, but it said that couldn’t be found.

So, please do you have any advice on diapers for tripawds? I would need disposable diapers, not just ones with a pad, since I would use them to collect all waste.

I so hope you can help me – your organization helped me so much during Maggie’s amputation. Thanks so much! Judi Schiff judischiff@yahoo.com

  1. I am not sure about the diapers. I know what we did with Sassy was fence off an area that she could use during the 4 or 5 days after chemo when it is mostly excreted. I called it her “chemo” pen. She didn’t mind using it because it was right outside the door not very far for her to hop when she didn’t feel like hopping a long way.
If you look at our blog we have pictures of it.

I always just made sure everything was picked up & double bagged during that time. I know that doesn’t help with the incontinence issues though I am sorry 🙁

  2. Thank you, Michelle for your quick reply! I appreciate it. We have a doggy door and a fenced-in yard, so I don’t think that would work for us, unless I kept them separated, which I hate to do. That’s why I was thinking of diapers, so even when she went outside, everything would be “caught”.

I would love to see your blog, but I’m not sure how to do it. I do have trouble navigating this sometimes.

    Thanks! Judi
PS How much time did the chemo give your Sweet Sassy?

  3. We see how it may be difficult to keep the diapers on a rear legger. Perhaps you could fit a snug t-shirt on Maggie, then pin the diapers to the shirt?

Hopefully others can offer better advice speaking from experience. Post in the forums and you’ll likely get more feedback.

  4. Ih Nudi, so sorry to n hear sweet Dottie is n having more health challenges. But one thing we all know for sure about Dottie, she’s a very determined and strong willed pup who has no intention of this slowing her down!! So gentle, so cute…but soooo strong!!

I don’t have any advice for the diaper dilemma, but my doggy Bodie did share a yard with Happy Hannah during her chemo (four rounds of carboplatin) Yeah, I picked up when I could, but there were times when Happy Hannah would poop when I was out!

Her Onco. never even mentioned being careful with her waste!! I found out about it on this forum!! Anyway, when I mentioned my situation with Bodie to here, she was NOT concerned at all. Basical ly she said Bodie wouldn’t be stepping in it or eating it so not to be concerned.

Please know we will all be cheering for cute Dottie! She does NOT have a time frame stamped on her but…never has…never will! Dottie likes blowing statistics out of the water anyway!!

Keep us updated when you can! Remember, we are all nere for you and Dottie!!

And CONGRATULATIONS on her accomplishments with Therapy International! GOOD JOB! Such an inspirational little girl!!

    Love!!

Sally and My Eternal Light Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

  5. Hi Judy,
Sorry for the second diagnosis- my Maggie’s second cancer was oral melanoma, I hate cancer!
Yea, I had the same problem with my Maggie when she got incontinent. Diapers just don’t stay on!
Two ideas- I used a med called Proin for incontence, it pretty much cured that problem.
Second idea is diaper suspenders! Check this site: http://www.handicappedpets.com/pet-diaper-suspenders
Let us know if it works.
