Goin’ for walks!

Maggie LOVES that she’s now getting to go on walks with MacKenzie and me.  She walks on her own until she tells me it’s time  to ride and – her carriage awaits!  Today I was listening to my iPod Shuffle and what song came on first?  Chicago’s “You’re the Inspiration”!!!  What else???   😀photo-1

OMG – Out for a Walk on Day 4!!!!!

I took Mackenzie for a walk this afternoon and Maggie ASKED my husband if she could go too!  he called me on my cell to say they were walking up our hill.  Kenzie and I turned right around and met them.  I took the following videos.  I couldn’t believe it – her right rear leg was just amputated of Friday and today is Monday!!!!  Maggie is a SUPER HERO!!!IMG_1997 IMG_1998

Future stairs???

I am thinking way in advance, but we have wood floors in our house.  Do you have suggestions on what to do when Maggie is ready to attempt steps?  Do we need to lay carpet on them or is there something else we can do?  Thanks!  Judi and Maggie

Itching!!!??? Day 4

Maggie continues doing GREAT!  She is zooming out the doggy door, eating and eliminating well.  She does not cry or anything, but stares at me and shakes a bit right before her pain meds are due, so I know she is feeling some pain then.  I try to help her with some massage and lots of love.

The one problem seems to be her stitches itching (and the area that has been shaved).  We put on her Cone of Shame when we have to leave her alone (which we try to avoid, by taking turns staying with her) and at night.  One of us is always with her at all other times, to tell her to “Leave it!” if she starts to bite the area.

The books recommends:

An anti-inflammatory spray, such as Dermacool Hc.
Over the counter medicines to relieve itching, such as Benadryl and Chlorpheniramine
Some vets recommend using ointment such as Neosporin
Homeopathic remedies suggested in The Whole Pet Diet, include Calendula, Comfrey and Myrh

I was wondering if any of you have tried/can recommend any of these and where can I find them?  (I live in a small town with VERY limited shopping – WalMart is our store!!!)

Thank you so much!  Judi and Maggie

Maggie pooped!!!! :D

So far, Maggie has jumped down from the lazy boy (before I could catch her!), gone in and out of the doggy door (twice!) and pooped outside!!!! Sorry about that last, but, from everything I’ve read, it’s a big step for tripods!!!  All this just one day after her surgery!!!!! AMAZING!!!

MAGGIE’S HOME!!!

MAGGIE’S HOME!!!! What a trooper she is! We called at 8:30 and went to pick her up at 9:30. We talked to the surgeon and he answered all our questions, then they brought her out, walking on her leash!!! She was all waggly and happy to see us! I had her in her little bed on my lap on the way home. Kenzie was a little afraid to approach Maggie at home, but came over, smelled her and now all is well. She has a soft Cone of Shame, which is much more comfy, but she is still trying to get at the incision. We are staying with her full time!!! OMG – she just tried to jump up on the couch!!! Rick put her on my lap on the lazy boy. She is amazing!!!

Maggie ate her dinner!!!!!

When I called the vet at 5, she said Maggie was really doing well and had eaten her dinner all gone! Amazing!!!  But – she hadn’t tried to get up yet and they hadn’t taken her out to the bathroom yet.  So, we made the decision to keep her there overnight.  I was afraid to disturb her, since she was content. Also, I want them to check her out thoroughly tomorrow, check the pain meds, etc.  It was (ANOTHER) difficult decision, but the vet was confident she will be fine and sleep undisturbed all night.  She will be alone from about 7 pm to 6:30 am.  I will call tomorrow at 8:30 and find out when we can pick her up!

Thank you all for your help and support!!!!!

Maggie came through the surgery fine!

The vet just called and told me that Maggie’s is doing fine and beginning to wake up.  She said the surgeon who did the amputation will be on call tonight, but will he not be THERE unless someone calls him in with an emergency!  She said to call her back at 5 and she will discuss if Maggie’s doing well enough, do I want to bring Maggie home tonight?

Do I want to do this????  Neither way seems ideal to me.  Any advice???  Thanks!  Judi
