Maggie came through the surgery fine!

The vet just called and told me that Maggie’s is doing fine and beginning to wake up.  She said the surgeon who did the amputation will be on call tonight, but will he not be THERE unless someone calls him in with an emergency!  She said to call her back at 5 and she will discuss if Maggie’s doing well enough, do I want to bring Maggie home tonight?

Do I want to do this????  Neither way seems ideal to me.  Any advice???  Thanks!  Judi

  1. The vet that did Shooter’s amp would not allow him to come home until two days after the surgery to give him time to work on the pain management. As much as I wanted him home the next day, I think it was much better giving both of us that extra day. That said, there are many on here that did have their dogs come home the next day or even the same day. Maybe they can pipe in with their opinions.

So glad she is doing OK after surgery. Sending pawsitive thoughts her way.

  2. Will there be anyone at the clinic overnight?? Some clinics are staffed by vet techs overnight with a vet on-call for emergencies and others don’t have any staff overnight. If there is going to be a tech there overnight, it might be better to leave her there for the night. It will give you the chance to try to get a good night’s sleep before she comes home. But if there isn’t going to be anybody there and you are just going to be awake all night worrying about her being unsupervised at the clinic then you might be better off bringing her home. It seems early to me and you will have to talk it all over with your vet. I picked Boomer up 21 hours after he came out of surgery – everything had gone well and there weren’t any complications but he was refusing to eat for them, so I was anxious to get him home.
I am really happy things went well for the surgery!
Take care, we’re sending you good energy.

  3. Well, I just got to this post and kow that you have already decided to leave her overnight! Soooooo, even though it’s after the fact, I also would say leaving her overnight is a great idea!

Most…not all…..but most vets keep them at least one night!

Yaaaaaaaaay for successful surgery and Yaaaaaaay for mom for “hanging tough”!
