Future stairs???

I am thinking way in advance, but we have wood floors in our house.  Do you have suggestions on what to do when Maggie is ready to attempt steps?  Do we need to lay carpet on them or is there something else we can do?  Thanks!  Judi and Maggie

  1. Yeah, ditto to Barrett about the treads.

Keep that wonderful positive attitude! You are doing great!

    1. Thanks! Have you seen the videos? Maggie is AMAZING!!! Now we have to be very careful to keep that baby gate up – or she might just try the steps on her own!!!

  2. Hi Judi,
My tri-pug Maggie was just about the same weight as your Maggie and was also a rear amp. My Mag was only about 12 inches at the shoulder though. She never would do more that 3 or 4 stairs up after her amp. I have a feeling she wiped out at my parents house once and then was pretty reluctant to try. She would go down anything- which is typical. Rear amps tend to have more trouble going up, front amps have more trouble going down.
My back deck had two stairs (built after Mag’s amp) and she did those fine as long has her non-skid rugs were there. If her rugs weren’t there or her sis was laying on them she would not go up. I think traction is key- the only stairs she would not go down were tiled stairs at my parents house. As she grew older I didn’t mind that she wouldn’t go up- lots of strain on the one back leg for such a little dog.
I built stairs for the couch and my bed, but she wouldn’t go up those either, again she went down them just fine. Maggie always was a little cautious.
Keep up the good work- sounds like your Maggie is doing well!

  3. Check out boots and socks for dogs that have grippy feet. My grand-dog Murphy just had front leg amputated due to osteocarcoma and we are going to try these out!
